Pulp Engine Evaluation Licence

Version 1.0 · Effective 2026-04-14

Copyright © 2026 Troy Krajancic (“Licensor”). All rights reserved.

Pulp Engine is commercial software. This Evaluation Licence (“Licence”) governs your use of Pulp Engine source code, binaries, Docker images, SDKs, and related materials (collectively, the “Software”) unless and until you hold a current, paid Commercial Licence (see §6).

1. Grant — what you may do

Subject to your compliance with this Licence, Licensor grants you a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to:

  1. Run the Software for evaluation, development, testing, internal demonstrations, proofs of concept, and training.
  2. Read, modify, and compile the Software’s source code for the purposes in §1.1.
  3. Install the Software on your own infrastructure (local machine, cloud account, private datacentre) for the purposes in §1.1.

“Evaluation” means genuine assessment of the Software’s fitness for your needs, not ongoing business operations.

2. Prohibitions — what you may not do

You may not:

  1. Use the Software in Production (see §3) without a current, paid Commercial Licence from Licensor.
  2. Remove, alter, obscure, or suppress the Evaluation Watermark emitted on rendered output by the unlicensed build (see §4).
  3. Redistribute the Software, source code, or derivative works to any third party.
  4. Sell, sublicense, rent, lease, or offer the Software as a hosted service (SaaS) to others.
  5. Use the Software to build a competing document-generation service, product, or SDK.
  6. Remove or modify copyright, licence, attribution, or trademark notices.

3. What counts as “Production”

“Production” means any deployment that:

  1. Processes, renders, or delivers documents for end-users, customers, or counterparties of your organisation (paid or unpaid), or
  2. Is part of a live, revenue-generating, or customer-facing system, service, product, or workflow, or
  3. Is deployed as a component of another product you ship, sell, license, or offer as a service.

Non-Production examples: local development, staging environments with internal-only traffic, continuous-integration test runs, architecture evaluations, internal demos to colleagues, training exercises.

If in doubt, assume your use is Production and contact Licensor (§6).

3.1 One Production Deployment

One Production Deployment means one logical Pulp Engine production environment serving a single production workload for the licensee. A logical production environment is a coherent set of Pulp Engine processes — including high-availability replicas that share state and serve the same workload as a single logical instance — operated by or on behalf of the licensee.

Multi-tenant SaaS use, clarified. If the licensee operates Pulp Engine in its multi-tenant mode to serve the licensee’s own customers or end-users from a single logical production environment, that constitutes one Production Deployment under this Licence, regardless of the number of Pulp Engine tenants configured within that environment. The Licence does not charge per licensee-end-customer.

When a separate deployment arises. A separate Production Deployment arises when the licensee operates logically-independent production environments — for example, different clusters serving different primary workloads, different internal business units, or different geographic regions operated as separate production environments for operational or regulatory reasons. Each such environment requires its own entitlement.

Non-Production. Development, staging, continuous-integration, and internal-demo environments are Non-Production per §3 above and do not count as Production Deployments.

4. Evaluation Watermark

When the Software is run without a valid Commercial Licence key (environment variable PULP_LICENCE_KEY), rendered output includes an Evaluation Watermark — a short visible string on PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, and HTML output indicating the build is under Evaluation Licence.

You agree that:

  1. The watermark is a material, deliberate feature of the Evaluation build.
  2. You will not disable, remove, crop, edit, or otherwise suppress the watermark in output distributed to any person or system (including output used in demonstrations to prospective third parties).
  3. Circumventing the watermark constitutes a breach of this Licence and unlicensed use of the Software.

5. Intellectual property

The Software, including all source code, specifications, designs, trademarks (“Pulp Engine”), and documentation, is owned by Licensor and protected by copyright, trade-secret, and other laws. This Licence grants no ownership rights. Any feedback you provide to Licensor may be used freely by Licensor without obligation.

6. Commercial Licence

To use the Software in Production, you must hold a current Commercial Licence, including the Early Adopter Programme offered at https://pulpengine.dev/pricing.

The Commercial Licence is a separate written agreement. It typically includes:

  • Rights to run the Software in Production on a stated number of instances
  • A licence key that suppresses the Evaluation Watermark
  • Support, updates, and other terms set out in that agreement

To obtain a Commercial Licence, apply via https://pulpengine.dev/pricing or contact troy@tksolutions.co.nz.

7. Term and termination

This Licence is effective on first use of the Software and continues until:

  1. You obtain a Commercial Licence (at which point the Commercial Licence governs), or
  2. You stop using the Software and delete all copies, or
  3. Licensor terminates this Licence because of your breach.

On termination, all rights in §1 cease. §§ 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 survive.

8. No warranty

EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. YOU USE THE SOFTWARE ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

9. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, LICENSOR SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, LOST DATA, OR BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THIS LICENCE OR THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. LICENSOR’S TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY SHALL NOT EXCEED AUD $100.

10. Governing law

This Licence is governed by the laws of New Zealand, without regard to conflicts-of-law principles. The courts of New Zealand have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from this Licence.

Plain-language summary (not part of the Licence)

  • Free for evaluation and development. Run it, read it, modify it, build a proof-of-concept with it.
  • Production use requires a paid Commercial Licence. Contact us — the Early Adopter Programme is open today, and the founding rate is guaranteed for 12 months from first purchase.
  • The Evaluation build stamps a small watermark on output. That stamp disappears with a valid licence key. Please don’t try to remove it — that’s a licence breach.
  • We’re a new product. The Early Adopter Programme is how legitimate buyers get priced fairly for taking an early bet.
  • Support & release terms. See the support & release policy for response targets, release cadence, and the founding-rate guarantee wording.
